By old TV I mean 4:3 screen with resolution lease than 720p X 480p
Most anime HQ DVD are in 16:9 rate, the problem is they may not have the subtitle you want. If you rip dvd into HQ mkv and then add subtitle by yourself, it should looks exact as the original DVD. You can watch these files on the computer screen, however, play the files on old TV will srew up everything.
First of all, you need a DVD player which can play avi with DivX encoding. Convert HQ mkv into the same size avi doesn’t help, you have resize the video into 720 X 480 during converting, which loses a lot information.
Then you can watch the video on the TV screen, by setting the display mode in NTSC Letterbox. You will discover a weird thing: the image on the far left and right side will disappear, you can not get the full image on the screen.
It is due to the fact the reproduction rate of TV screen is about 90%, comparing to 100% of your computer, to avoid uncomfortable deformation around the edge of screen.
So you have no choice but resize the original(mkv) image even smaller(640 X 360 for instance) and add black border to the rezised one, the new 720 X 480 video will be perfect on the TV screen.
When you understand how to set the parameters correctly, just let computer do it job. It takes extremely long to convert one season.
Alas, such a waste of time.
